Removing stereotypes one move at a time.

"The Puerto Rican doesn't always have to be the fucking grocer or the plumber," says actor Luis Guzman (Esquire Magazine). "He could be the head of the fucking FBI. He can be the main investigator. He can do the forensic stuff."

That about sums up one of my biggest fear -- that I'll end up trapped in a world limited by our various stereotypes.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with being Jose-the-plumber, far from. I just don't want a life limited to just a few standard roles.

Must be why I love reading news like those -- 'classrooms at Flores Magón Academy on the Westminster-Denver border' where -- 'students are removing stereotypes one checkmate at a time.' -- (Denver News).

The school, which is 90 percent Hispanic, placed second in the Denver Scholastic Chess Series tournament Dec. 6 and placed second in two tournaments earlier in the year...competing against schools mostly classified as white, affluent and suburban...

Showing that brain-power is not limited to just one group of folks and that -- "The chess board becomes a living metaphor for the choices they make in preparation for college," says that classes instructor.

"Our opponents are apathy, injustice and a lack of high expectations."

Makes me wanna take up chess again...
