MILAN: black women missing from the runway?
POST A COMMENT
Interesting article talking about the very blond fashion runway trend (Source Washington Post):
"At the Jil Sander show, for example, the models were so homogeneous that they were virtual clones: overwhelmingly tall, thin, pale and with hair ranging from platinum blond to honey blond to the occasional warm brunette....one wonders whether anyone at Jil Sander has noticed that brown people actually exist."
The article entitled "White is the New White" talks about the racial divide -- (or exclusion of blacks) -- among fashion houses:
"Similar whiteouts occurred on the runways of Prada and Marni in Milan and at Calvin Klein in New York. The explanation for these choices always comes down to aesthetics, which is a designer's prerogative. The models have been chosen because they fit easily into the samples. Because they have a certain look. Because they convey a single, uninterrupted message on the runway. Because they do not distract from the clothes."
So should a black girl complain that she doesn't get to sashay in expensive clothes before an audience... -- the author puts it this way:
"We put beauty on a pedestal as something admirable, desirable and valuable. Beauty -- unfairly or not -- has its privileges. And by defining which people are beautiful and which people are simply invisible, the fashion industry helps determine how much cultural currency someone has at his or her disposal." -- 'guess, based on this article, black women have very little cultural clout...'somebody should start a new culturally diverse line called: Invisible.

Cringe Factor: TMZ on TV?!
I had removed TMZ on TV from my tivo list...here's a short online chat (Washington Post) that sums up --like a two drink maximum -- why following around "B" list celebs really only works in very, very small doses:POST A COMMENT
----- (here's what they said) -----
TMZ TV: Does anyone else feel bad when they watch this? I mean, Christina Aguilera shopping for light fixtures? It just makes me sad. She wants a new lamp. And 45 people with cameras are following her.
Liz Kelly: Ya, I have to admit that TMZ on TV has managed to evoke the exact same reaction in me as the Web site: revulsion mixed with a little curiosity splashed with a smattering of guilt. It's all so shameless and inane and up-to-the-minute all at once. It's bascially a broadcast venue for the videos we've been watching all along on the Web. Now they just have yet another distro channel.
I guess it's attraction depends on how many Britney Spears bathroom footage or shots outside of L.A. nightclubs we can stomach.

'reading about "telling little green lies" --(Business Week) that talks about how Green Living is a hot button issue in Britain:
Being green is now seen as a competitive pursuit by 68 per cent of those questioned and the new way to 'keep up with the Joneses', one report said.
Almost sounds like adding that pressure here in the USA could help our environment woes....however, that same report said a "staggering 90 percent of those surveyed said they had lied to friends and neighbors about living in an earth friendly way."
the main reason for those little green lies? -- one-fifth of the folks said they didn't know how to make their lives more eco-responsible.Labels: environment

Education: going the extra mile!
POST A COMMENT
Merit Pay for Teachers is an idea that seems reasonable: "Recognize better workers with extra pay." -- like a job bonus!
A recent Newsweek article talked about a math teacher at an inner-city public school -- running a program for failing ninth graders...with an extra push, (most students passed) -- that Teacher got an extra $300 bonus tacked on to her salary and said, "It's not much but the money helps give me the incentive to go the extra mile."
Seems pretty fair, since teachers are way underpaid to offer bonuses for those that deliver!

Bush Kills emissions reduction acts!
_________ ’love new music…’that right sound can set the moodPOST A COMMENT
’mood for truth?…’breath this in -- there are documents that reveal the Bush administration killed "emissions" efforts out in Cali (Source Washington Post):
"The Bush administration has conducted a concerted, behind-the-scenes lobbying campaign to try to generate opposition to California's request to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from cars and trucks, according to documents obtained by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform."
'Song sound familar?
"A flurry of e-mails among Transportation Department (DOT) officials and between its staffers and the White House, released yesterday, highlights efforts that administration officials have made to stir up public opposition to the waiver. Rather than attacking California's request outright, Bush officials quietly reached out to two dozen congressional offices and a handful of governors to try to undermine it."

Fencing In Poverty!
POST A COMMENT
While unequal justice divide folks (down in Jena) -- how 'bout -- putting a fence put up -- along poverty lines (Source Washington Post):
In Washington DC when a "fence" suddenly appears between two neighborhoods -- "low-income and subsidized townhouses called Picton" and -- right "Next door, houses of East Village (a degree more affluent)" -- the division becomes polarized by income and self worth!
"The six-foot-high black metal barrier tipped with spikes stretched across the asphalt trail that had long connected Watson's Montgomery Village neighborhood with the neighborhood next door."
Before the fence, the poorer residents of Picton used the paths to reach the bus stops and swimming pools on the far side of East Village...One wonders if putting up fences (along economic lines) serves to box in both the "have nots" and the "have mores."Labels: Culture, Poverty Divide

it's not forever...
POST A COMMENT
The lady in red sat back on the hard subway seat; two men -- separately unware of each other -- watched her from across the car. The first man thought about last nights reality television show and the lady in red was like shading for his thoughts, she could fit right in as the girl that most likely to make it to next weeks episode.
The other guy was mentally dissecting a night of passion, where a slow motion mind trick played out the removal of the red garment. His naughty thoughts linger on what could be done with the red garment (and then some).
This was not unusual for her, she was not unaware of the attention of men, but some days it did go un noticed...or she was immune to the looks -- like a brick wall around a sheltered flower that needed no sunlight to grow.
"Beauty is not forever," her mother had told her. "Enjoy it." -- and on night's out she did enjoy it. But, the echo of truth and time (the double T's) are what kept her from thinking this was forever.

New Money helps Fashion Grow!
POST A COMMENT
'crazy that the English prudes regard any high fashion taste as "a kind of ghetto..." -- but, that's quickly changing...with new money infusion in the form of Russian immigrants (source NYTIMES):
"some 200,000 Russians (now) live in London, many of them affluent and well informed about fashion. Indeed, among English retailers, there has been a general broadening in outlook toward Russian and Arabic luxury shoppers, driven in part by the speed of information. No longer is there the temptation to regard taste as a kind of ghetto.."
Yea, Fashion is about looking good...but ultimately it takes social integration of immigrants -- in other words that New "Money" to transform itself into a business -- and allow people to spend "with a vengeance."
“It’s made us more confident that we can sell a $10,000 dress by a young designer,” said one boutique owner. -- so, folks...don't be afraid of change...it's possible immigrants will someday save us all!

It's the Parents (not teenagers) who are more brainless!
POST A COMMENT
We can spend an hour talking about the dumbing down of America...but, this article says branding all "teenagers as stupid, crazy...and even alien," to curb "youthful freedoms" is more about our Parents --
-- research suggests "brain-based parenting" -- (or the calling of younger folk small minded) -- is way off base: "People naturally want to use brain science to inform policy...but our limited knowledge of the brain places extreme limits on that effort...There can be no...‘brain-based parenting’ at this early point in the history of neuroscience.”
Mommies-Bad-Brain: "youths are being maligned to draw attention from the reality that it’s actually middle-aged adults — the parents — whose behavior has worsened."

Why not an Electric Car?
POST A COMMENT
"Electric cars could be a game changer," says this article:
"the public's perception of the electric car is about to get a big makeover, and it's going to start with the Tesla electric roadster. It goes from 0 to 60 in 4 seconds. You plug it at night, and the next day it can go 200 miles on a charge. There's no gas tank, no tailpipe, no oil changes and certainly no boredom."

'Spendin' like a Rock*Star!
Regardless of race: 'don't we all wannabe "King of that Hill?"POST A COMMENT
-- if you buy into this article on "color spending," -- the author suggests Blacks and Hispanics buy a lot more like a rock star (to show off their fancy stuff):
"Blacks and Hispanics devote larger shares of their expenditure bundles to visible goods (clothing, jewelry, and cars) than do comparable Whites."
Translation: The author is talking about that "payday-rich" mentality, where poor people shop for expensive labels they really can't afford -- to floss those new toys for everyone to see...'to feel socially relevant.
'they go onto to suggest:
"Other people judge your income based on your conspicuous consumption and your group's income. Under plausible conditions, the authors show that if your group's income is already high conspicuous consumption has a low marginal product. Put differently a black man who wears a very expensive suit gets a bigger increase in status than a white man who wears the same expensive suit because the baseline income prediction is lower for the former."
TRANSLATION: Even if you poor as dirt and 'got no money...it's still all 'bout showing people you got nice shit to increase your status among your peers.

That New David Cronenberg flick (“Eastern Promises”), has a swell-in bath house scene with a nude Viggo Mortensen...which prompted this NYPOST article.
Not sure about the fuss on male nudity on film-- (we were, after all, born nude)...but, I found this ratings part interesting:
Ratings: While male genitalia almost always automatically garners an R rating (and an NC-17 if there’s an erection), the memorable scene in this summer’s “The Simpsons Movie,” in which Bart skateboards while naked, demonstrates that animated willies don’t count.

POST A COMMENT
Where have I been? -- wasn't aware that Amazon wanted some of that iTunes cash-e'
Is it a smart move for NBC to move to Amazon...listen to this argument:
Basics of What Happened
This case can be summed in 5 basic steps:
1. NBC’s sells shows on Apple’s iTunes Store at $1.99 per episode; contract comes up for renewal
2. NBC tries to re-negotiate with Apple asking $4.99 per episode; Apple refuses to budge on price
3. Negotiation goes public; NBC hoped “the people” would side with them, forcing Apple to concede
4. Negotiations goes nowhere; NBC switches to Amazon’s Unbox service for Tivo

As the economic gap widens -- 'appears as if -- No Child Left Behind (and SAT tests) need more than to be measured by school districts:
Nationwide (SAT test scores this year are starkly...very, black and white),
white students averaged 1579 on the SAT in 2007;
blacks averaged 1287.
(The gap, 292 points)-- according to the Washington Post.
"The disparity is..the classic example of the racial achievement gap in public education." -- this complicated issue of standardized test goes beyond textbook learning and color barriers...and by no means suggests white students are better...just way better positioned for success.
'and the article goes onto to say "Education starts at home": "sending their children to a top school is not enough. Parents must learn the system: enroll their children in advanced courses, see that they get good grades, take the right tests and earn the right scores, and "aggressively" encourage performance.
. . .
Christopher Jencks, a professor of social policy at Harvard University who co-wrote a book about the achievement gap, notes other societal forces that can drag down black students at affluent schools. Black teens in well-heeled suburbs tend to socialize with children less affluent than themselves, to the detriment of their academic goals, he said. And black families might be less gripped by the "rat-race mentality" that sweeps up most parents in such suburbs as Potomac.
"Being behind is discouraging," he said. "And the easiest thing to do when you're behind is say, 'Oh well, who cares about this race anyway?' "

Dream Today
Usually, don't remember much about my dreams; Here's what I remember about my dream today:POST A COMMENT
I was playing some type of role in life, I'm going to say it was a ring leader of sorts. There was a vehicle involved in the tail end. I approached Rodney to talk to him about some changes that needed to be made.
I remember that how awkward it was dealing with, the second of three responsibilities (or groups), because I was somehow romantically involved with the second. The first group was an unknown factor.
Usually, dealing with the unknown factor is the easiest. No emotional ties when making decisions. It's like a robot in auto pilot.
